New Water Plan advisory
members chosen
Capital
Press
May 25, 2007
LUCERNE, Calif. -
The Department of Water Resources announced Thursday that it has chosen
the members of the California Water Plan Update 2009 Public Advisory
Committee, and that the group's first meeting will take place June 4-5
in Sacramento.
The water plan, according to the Department of Water Resources, is
updated every five years based on California Water Code requirements. It
evaluates the state's water resources and supplies, looks at uses - from
agriculture to urban - and looks at the state's future water needs. It
is a key element in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Strategic Growth Plan.
Lester Snow, director of the Department of Water Resources, said in a
statement that the plan is "
California
's roadmap for managing the
state's water resources," that depends on the collaboration of a
"wide array of stakeholders."
Thirty-one committee members and four alternatives were named Thursday,
with representatives from sectors including agriculture, business, local
government, citizens groups, recreation and urban users, the Department
of Water Resources reported.
The department also reported it is partnering with 16 other state
agencies on the plan update. A state agency steering committee will
incorporate into the plan water issues, initiatives and information from
all of those entities.
The Department of Water Resources reported that the 2005 water plan had
two key initiatives: promoting integrated regional water management
through regional partnerships and diversified management strategies; and
maintaining and improving statewide water management systems.
The update for 2009 will track the progress of those initiatives,
present figures for water uses and supplies for water years 1998-2005,
and address potential impacts of climate change.
Besides the advisory committee, the Department of Water Resources said
the plan will be updated through a collaborative process that welcomes
public input. Regional workshops and forums on water issues and
management will be held several times a year.
Workshops will take place in eight cities this summer, with a regional
forum also planned, according to a Department of Water Resources
statement. Dates will be announced soon.
An annual plenary meeting will also be held to bring all participants
together, the department reported. The first plenary meeting is
scheduled for October 22-23 in
Sacramento
.
All meetings are open to the public.
Regular information updates and public meeting notices are posted on the
California Water Plan Web site.
