Fish
and wildlife commission listen to public comment on salmon seasons
March 21, 2008
By Azenith Smith
NORTH BEND - As
part of a two-day visit, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission sits
down with community members for a formal discussion Friday to address
current issue, including the just-announced salmon closures, south of
Cape Falcon.
After a community reception Thursday night, the seven-member panel got
down to business at the
North
Bend
Community Center
.
During the meeting, fishery managers briefed them on the various options
for sport and commercial salmon seasons, in light of the closures, and
the impact to fishermen on the
South
Coast
.
"That's really where the level of frustration is why are these
fisheries so low," says ODFW Information and Education Manager Rick
Hargrave. "What we are hearing is we hope there's some options for
these folks to go out and have at least some opportunities off the Coast
so they continue to make that living."
The meeting was also a means for public comment on the proceedings, with
many of the concerned fishermen appreciative of the commission's efforts
to work with them through this difficult process.
"The data analysis and data collection that
Oregon
does is very superior to what I've seen
other states do," says Sport Fisherman Richard Heap. "Our
information is collected in a in a timely manner, which gives us the
tools to prepare for our salmon season, setting salmon options."
The members will now weigh the community's feedback after the Pacific
Fisheries Management Council meet once again next month in
Seattle
. The commission will then approve the
regulations in May.
