PORTLAND
,
Ore.
— A coalition that wants
to see PacifiCorp's dams removed on the
Klamath River
will try to rally support from the power company's
customers.
Tribes, conservation
groups, fishermen and others will host a press conference today in front
of Pacific Power's headquarters in
Portland
,
Ore.
Organizers are concerned
that if dams are allowed to continue operating on the
Klamath River
, costs to upgrade them to
meet standards would be absorbed by the power company's customers, said
Steve Weiss, senior policy analyst for the NW Energy Coalition.
"We don't want (the
power company) to raise rates," he said. "We're just raising
the bar and bringing in the ratepayers' interests."
About 50,000 brochures
were mailed to the power company's customers in
Portland
to get the word out about
Tuesday's event, said Craig Tucker with the Karuk Tribe.
The campaign in
Portland
will encourage PacifiCorp's
customers to write letters to their state's Public Utility Commission
stating their concerns.
"We're opening up a
new front in the battle," Tucker said.
