A coalition of more than 60 fishing businesses; organizations; boat, bait and tackle manufacturers; and American Indian tribes announced plans Thursday for a grass-roots campaign to restore California’s ailing fisheries.

The announcement was made during the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle, Boat and Travel Show, which is being held Wednesday through Sunday in San Francisco.

According to Dick Pool, campaign coordinator and owner of the Concord-based tackle company Pro-Troll, dams, diversions and mismanagement are leading to a massive fisheries failure in California and action must be taken now to save the fisheries.

Representing Northern California’s Karuk Tribe, traditional dip-net fisherman Ron Reed said the Klamath River’s dams are killing the salmon runs for the tribes, as well as for fishermen all along the West Coast.

The fishermen’s petition calls for the removal of four dams on the Klamath River and a moratorium on any California Delta or Klamath water development project that has negative impact on fisheries. It also calls for full funding for and compliance with the provisions of the Central Valley Project Improvement Act, which requires the doubling of salmon, steelhead and striped bass populations.
