Fisheries scientists to gather to discuss Klamath fish diseases

The Eureka Reporter

January 26, 2008

Federal fisheries agencies will hold a workshop Tuesday in Fortuna on the complex life cycles of diseases affecting fish in the Klamath River Basin .

The public is invited to attend the Klamath River Fish Health Conference at Fortuna River Lodge where the status and influence of what is causing diseases in the Klamath River Basin fish will be discussed.

The workshop is being sponsored by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Fisheries biologist Jim Simondet, from NMFS’s Arcata office, said the conference provide researchers and scientists who have been working with the Klamath’s anadromous salmon populations a forum to discuss new research and to compare and contrast data with other scientists that has been gathered over a number of years of study.

While last year’s two-day event included a panel discussion by resource managers on the integration of management in the Klamath region, Simondet said this year’s scaled back one-day event is focused primarily on research.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for those interested in learning more about the fish monitoring aspect of the recently released Klamath Basin Settlement Agreement that aims to remove four dams on the Klamath and initiate an extensive restoration effort.

The one-day workshop will provide presentations on a range of issues related to fish health in the Klamath River Basin, which will include information developed by university researchers, area tribes and state and federal fisheries management agencies.

Topics will include updates on the distribution and habitats of disease pathogens and their hosts, rates of infections among salmonid populations, and the influence of environmental conditions on fish diseases in the Klamath River .

The meeting is free and open to the public. Registration for Tuesday’s event begins at 8:30 a.m.
