Klamath dam removal fundraiser announced

March 1 2008

The Eureka Reporter

The Klamath Riverkeeper and some North Coast residents are hosting a fundraiser at the Bayside Grange on March 14 to raise funds for new efforts in the campaign the Un-Dam the Klamath.

The event is co-sponsored by the Karuk Tribe Department of Natural Resources and local Humboldt County environmental groups, which are planning and carrying out grassroots events focused on removal of what they believe are the destructive Klamath River dams, according to a news release.

“We not only hope to raise money, but build awareness and get more people involved in the grassroots part of this campaign effort,” according to Regina Chichizola of the Klamath Riverkeeper.

The Un-Dam the Klamath Benefit will include a gourmet dinner, a silent auction, speakers from local tribes and commercial fishing community and a “reggae-funk jam down.”

Dam removal proponents will be available to answer questions and attendees can sign up to get involved at the event.

“It is time we up the ante on the Klamath dams,” stated Chichizola from the Klamath Riverkeeper.

All proceeds from the March 14th benefit will go to funding grassroots events and rallies aimed at pressuring Warren Buffett and his subsidiary PacifiCorp to remove the lower four Klamath River dams.

The groups say that funds are needed to help get tribal members and local fishermen to events in places like Portland where PacifiCorp is headquartered and even Omaha , Neb. , where Buffett’s investment firm Berkshire Hathaway is headquartered.

The groups are holding an activists’ meeting to plan events at the Yurok community center in Weitchpec on March 1 at 10 a.m.
