Property rights forum Saturday in Greeley

By DAN BARKER

There are a number of issues around the government taking land and property rights Morgan County residents should be aware of, which is why the Good Neighbor forum is scheduled for Saturday in Greeley.

Among those which directly affect local people are “first in time, first in right” water rights in Colorado, how the Endangered Species Act impacts the use of water and even how bars have been affected by the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, said Chuck Miller of Brush, a spokesperson for the Private Property Rights Foundation of the West.

This is not an opportunity for politicians to air their views, but “just the people speaking out,” he said. People should go “so they can understand exactly what is taking place.”

Many people do not know everything that is happening or the ramifications for their own lives, Miller said.

In an informal workshop setting, expert speakers will talk on the topics of “Extortion Versus Just Compensation,” “Upholding ‘First in Time, First in Right’ Water Rights,” “Your Constitution and Gummer Snails,” “Responsible Transportation Legislation,” “Are the Earthvexors Coming, Or Are They Here?,” “What Do Roni Bell and Howard Stern Have in Common?,” “The Indigenous of Pinon Canyon” and “Are You a Good Neighbor?”

The forum runs 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Island Grove Regional Park 4-H Building at 501 N. 14th Ave. in Greeley.

Pre-registration at $15 includes lunch. Seating is limited and pre-registration is recommended.

Although they will not be speaking, government officials and representatives have been invited and the Good Neighbors organization is asking people to encourage their county commissioners, state and federal legislators to attend.

Morgan County residents should attend to find out what they can do in their own backyard, Miller said.

This type of forum, organized at a grassroots level, has never been done before, he said.
