Fiscal year 2008 was a record for agricultural exports, but experts say the trend is expected to plummet this year.

A USDA publication, “Outlook for U.S. Agricultural Trade,” says fiscal year 2009 agricultural exports are forecast to total $98.5 billion, down 17 percent from record 2008 sales. The forecast for livestock, poultry and dairy products is $20.4 billion, nearly $1.8 billion below last year’s total.

The forecast is based on concerns about weaker foreign demand, a result of the global economic slowdown, and a stronger dollar.

While the potential for export gains seems somewhat bleak, Chanda Engel, OSU Extension Service livestock and forages agent, said Klamath Basin beef producers can benefit from learning the ins and outs of the export market by attending the Cattlemen’s Update 2009. The presentation is being offered by the OSU Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center through a special partnership with the University of Nevada.

“We’re the only site in Oregon offering a downlink,” Engel said.

Topics will include the changing international beef market and export marketing opportunities, country of origin labeling and animal welfare and biosecurity.

The free presentation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5 at 3328 Vandenberg Road. Space is limited, so those interested should call 883-7131 by Friday to reserve a spot.
