Plans for the 2006 crop year were supplied by farmers and ranchers in Oregon and the United States during a March agricultural survey.
    Following are the results of the survey from the National Agricultural Statistics Service:
    Winter wheat growers in Oregon planted an estimated 800,000 acres for harvest in 2006, a decrease of 4 percent when compared to last year. Throughout the United States growers planted 41.4 million acres, up 2 percent from 2005.
    Barley acreage in Oregon is expected to total 50,000 acres, 15,000 acres less than 2005 and the lowest total since 1892. In 2004 Oregon barley producers planted 75,000 acres. Throughout the United States, barley growers intend to plant 3.67 million acres for 2006, down 5 percent from last year. If realized, this will be the lowest barley acreage on record.
    Sugarbeet acreage in Oregon is expected to total 11,000 acres, compared to 9,800 planted acres in 2005. In the United States the total acreage is expected to total 1.37 million acres, 6 percent higher than 2005.
    Oregon producers intend to harvest 980,000 acres of all hay while throughout the United States, producers expect to harvest 61.5 million acres of all hay this year, down fractionally from 2005.
    These estimates will be updated in an acreage report June 30.
