Family farms mean
much to America
Klamath Falls Herald and News Letter
A recent supplement to the
Herald and News discussed land use in the Klamath
Basin.
One concept that sticks in my
mind is that the financial return on agricultural land,
meaning the family farm, is marginal and perhaps the
land and water could be put to better use by other
developments.
The family farm contributes
greatly to every rural community across America. Not all
farming and ranching endeavors have high profit margins,
but wealth can be measured in different ways.
I don’t think city people have
the right to tell country people whether their lifestyle
and pursuits have adequate economic value to secure
their water rights. If the farmers or ranchers can pay
their bills and sustain their property to their
satisfaction, that should be sufficient.
My husband and I never showed a lot of profit
and in a few years we had none at all in spite of all
our hard work. But we liked what we did and took pride
in our efforts. Our worse years were a direct result of
policies from the Jimmy Carter administration when
interest rates climbed to over 20 percent.
The financial crisis we are experiencing now
can be tied to leaders in the Democratic Party,
including Christopher Dodd and Barney Franks and the
liberal policies they embrace.
Our best hope is real conservative leadership.
Sarah Palin brings that to the Republican ticket.
