Fire managers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to burn 7,100
acres of marshlands today at Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.
The
goal is to reduce standing vegetation and improve waterfowl nesting and
foraging habitat in the refuge’s south marsh unit, the Wildlife
Service said in a press release.
The
burn will be accomplished using a helicopter for aerial ignition. Fire
crews will be on hand to prevent the burn from growing beyond its
intended boundaries.
Columns
of smoke rising from the refuge may be visible throughout the day.
Travelers along
Silver Lake Highway
between
Highway 97 and the wildlife refuge headquarters should expect minimal
delays. A pilot car will control traffic near the burn along
Silver Lake
Highway
.
