Rumors that a decision is likely to be made soon on removal of four
hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River are likely just that: Rumors.
A PacifiCorp official on Friday did not rule out the possibility, but
proponents of the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement said they’d be
surprised to see a resolution before the end of June.
“We’re running out of time,” said Jeff Mitchell, Klamath tribal
councilman.
Dam removal key
Removal of four Pacifi-Corp-owned dams is a key component of the
restoration agreement. Proponents want them removed to restore passage
for migratory fish and aid habitat restoration.
Power company officials have said dam removal is dependent on whether
proponents can satisfy their concerns. PacifiCorp is meeting with the
federal government, specifically the U.S. Department of the Interior,
but officials wouldn’t say what was being discussed.
“As you know, the issues we’re talking about are complicated,” said Toby
Freeman, PacifiCorp’s regional community manager.
Mitchell, Klamath County Commissioner John Elliott and Greg Addington,
executive director of Klamath Water Users Association, said they’ve
heard no reliable information that a final decision on the dams is
looming.
“I think the end of the month is a little ambitious,” Elliott said.
