Lawmakers support buyout of grazing lands

Three federal lawmakers threw their support behind an effort to buyout grazing leases within the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and protect about 24,000 acres.

U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., will introduce a companion House bill this week to a bill going to the Senate floor to set aside the portion of the monument known as Soda Mountain .

U.S. Sens. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., have worked with ranchers and environmentalists to push the bill forward. Walden supports it but said he wants to make sure ranchers are compensated before the land is set aside.

The senators have worked for years to pass the legislation. Under the bill, private funds would compensate ranchers who retire their grazing rights within the
Soda Mountain area of the monument to the Bureau of Land Management.

That area would then be closed off to future grazing and be granted wilderness protection status. Conservationists say
Soda Mountain has valuable biological diversity that was threatened by grazing cattle.

“This fair, common sense solution will keep the issue out of court, keep ranchers in the saddle and protect our precious natural resources,” Smith said in a press release.

Walden will introduce companion legislation to ensure that public funds that were intended to contribute to the buyout are provided. The Senate bill initially included up to $300 per animal unit per month but it was stripped in the final version.

“We want the wilderness and the buyouts to reach the finish line at the same time,” said Andrew Whelan, Walden’s spokesman.
