New Farm Bill could include Basin

Oct. 8, 2007

Klamath Falls Herald and News

Both U.S. senators from
Oregon are working to keep the Klamath Basin on the mind of lawmakers.

U.S. Sens. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., sent a letter to the Senate Agriculture Committee urging designation of the Basin as a national priority watershed in the new Farm Bill.

The Basin had the designation in the 2002 Farm Bill, which expired Sept. 30.

National priority watersheds receive financial aid from the Regional Watershed Enhancement Program.

After receiving the designation in 2002, the Basin received aid to improve water conservation through better irrigation systems and the amount of wetlands has grown.

The Senate has yet to pass any legislation connected to the 2007 Farm Bill.
