No one should ‘own’ water rights

February 1, 2008

It would seem a little common sense and consideration would help to cut through the complexity of the water issue and achieve a balanced perspective and more sustainable outcome for all.

First and foremost, no one regardless of status should “own “ or have exclusive rights to water and have a right to sell or trade it on such a basis — to such a fundamental life-sustaining natural resource all inherently have a equal right to as needed.

Realistically, the distribution can get complicated, yet such an equal ownership premise is nonetheless true and must be recognized as the foundation to build upon to achieve harmonious sustainability.

So what good will it do the fish if the dams come down, but there isn’t as much water because it’s been bartered-off? And who represents the long-term greater good of the majority: The average citizen? And what will they wind-up with?

Given business as usual, it would seem the majority will be ignored or minimized while special interests receive advantageous treatment dividing up the water while the politicians receive their usual cut via campaign contributions. Meanwhile, the rights of the common citizen will continue to be undermined. Is enabling such injustice not in opposition to democracy?

Is this the
America we stand for and want?
