Name: Toby Freeman, regional community director Represents:
Portland
based PacifiCorp
Significance: The power company owns four hydroelectric dams on the
Klamath River
that are currently in
relicensing hearings with the federal government. Removal of the dams is
a requirement of proposed Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement.
Background: Freeman began working for Pacifi-Corp
Aug. 22, 2001
, in the middle of the 2001
water crisis that shut off water for
Klamath
Basin
irrigators.
It wasn’t until February 2002 that Freeman became
more familiar with the situation in the Basin after he was assigned to
the
Klamath River
dams relicensing team as a
manager.
He has since moved to the Basin and is employed as
PacifiCorp’s regional community manager.
His job involves interacting with about 75,000
customers from Siskiyou and Modoc counties in
California
to those in Klamath and
Lake
counties in
Oregon
.
“It gives me a different appreciation when the
people I used to sit with in meetings I now bump into in the supermarket
or in a restaurant,” he said.
