PacifiCorp
has agreed to shut down hydroelectric turbines fed by the Link River Dam
during summer months to improve conditions for endangered suckers.
In
an agreement with Oregon Wild, the public utility agreed to shut down
power production by idling its turbines from July 15 to Nov. 15 while
endangered fish are migrating to the southern part of
Upper Klamath Lake
.
That is intended to keep endangered

River
suckers and short-nosed
suckers from being killed by turbines.
Habitat
fund
PacifiCorp also agreed to put 22 percent of the
proceeds generated from the dam’s annual operations into a fund for
habitat restoration through wetlands enhancement.
Wetlands restoration will result in cleaner water
throughout the
Klamath
Basin
, PacifiCorp said in a press
release.
The settlement headed off a possible lawsuit by Oregon
Wild under the Endangered Species Act.
“We always prefer to negotiate rather than litigate
to achieve reasonable and balanced outcomes,” said PacifiCorp Energy
President Rob Lasich.
Oregon Wild Conservation Director Steve Pedery called
it “a winwin-agreement.”
“ We entered these negotiations because we saw a
settlement as the best and quickest way to provide increased protection
for the endangered fish that call
Upper Klamath Lake
home,” Pedery said.
