TULELAKE
— Fire fighters at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge
are preparing to begin burning upwards of 3,000 acres of stubble fields
with prescribed fire at the
Tule
Lake
and Lower
Klamath National Wildlife Refuges.
Spokesmen
for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the fall burns are annual
treatments for lease land farm fields to remove post-harvest vegetation
and prepare fields for winter flooding and hunting.
Burns
will be done this month and November as weather conditions and resource
availability permit. Refuge fire specialists are managing planned burns
in conjunction with other state and federal agencies to minimize smoke
impacts. Smoke may be present during the burns so motorists should be
cautious while traveling through or adjacent to burn areas.
