Garrett Roseberry: Not enough guarantees

Garrett Roseberry raises cattle and hay on his ranch near Sprague River The water settlement will affect Roseberry and other off-Project

irrigators in terms of water and power to their farms and ranches.

Garrett Roseberry is new to the Klamath Basin but not to agriculture and resource issues.

The rancher was raised east of Bend in an area where no running water existed.

His family maintained pastureland for its cattle operation with water from an irrigation district that relied on groundwater pumps.

Roseberry now owns 7,500 acres near the Sprague River , off the Klamath Reclamation Project. About 2,000 of those acres are irrigated pasture and hay fields.

   Natural resources

He says he was drawn by the Basin’s affordable land prices and by its place in the cattle market, as many herds from California are brought here for summer grazing.

He’s developed a fondness for open bodies of water, and he and his family enjoy boating and water sports in the area’s lakes.

Since he’s moved to the area, Roseberry gained an understanding of the complexity of natural resources. He’s now president of the Sprague River Water Group, which represents water users in the upper part of the Klamath Basin

Water and power equally concern the off-Project rancher, as irrigated portions of his ranch depend on both powered irrigation and naturally flowing water. Without either, he and other irrigators would have a hard time doing business.

   Accepting community

Roseberry says he has no intention of leaving the region. The Basin community is very welcoming and accepting of newcomers. People want to get to know you and will still call you a neighbor even if you disagree on something.

Combined with the assets the area provides for agriculture, there’s no place he’d rather be.

“This community is a very forgiving community,” he says.
