Fish swim in the water as bald eagles circle over the 2,000 acres of
marshland west of the Running Y Ranch Resort.
A
year ago, the land that’s now a haven for wildlife was a farmer’s
wheat crop.
On
The
Running Y Ranch Resort, which at the time owned two-thirds of the marsh,
purchased the remaining third of the land last fall.
Resort officials plan to turn it back into farmland and are removing
water from the land with mechanical pumps.
The project should be completed by fall 2007, said Jon Barkee,
development director for the Running Y.
Uncertain how the breach repairs would be handled, Barkee said the
Running Y purchased the property as a way to gain control of the
process. Three holes at the golf course were submerged after the levee
break, one of holes had to be completely reseeded, Barkee said.
Running Y spent more than $2 million in repairs.
The resort also is working with fish and wildlife officials to preserve
wildlife on the marshland.
