Klamath Falls Herald and News
By DYLAN DARLING
A layer of snow beat many leaves to the ground Monday
when a fall snowstorm frosted the Klamath Basin.
From midnight to Monday evening, about 8 inches of snow fell at Kingsley
Field, said Russ Onsen, a contract weather observer. But much of that snow
became a slushy mess as it piled up.
“It's a wet snow and it's kind of melting when it
hits the ground,” Onsen said.
The slush wasn't limited to the air base. While the hills around Klamath Falls
turned a brilliant white, streets around town were browned by a mush of snow
and road grime.
The heavy wet snow pulled trees down around town. One blocked the A Canal bike
path between Hope Street and Mazama High School, and the branches of another
landed on a Mitsubishi parked on California Avenue.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service expected the snow to taper off
Monday night. By today, they said, the blanket of snow could be exchanged for
a cover of fog.
Patchy fog is expected today and widespread fog is then expected to fill the
Basin until Wednesday night. Thursday, patchy fog is expected again.
With the fog, should come lower night temperatures .
“Temperatures will down to the teens and 20s,” said Sven Nelaimischkies, a meteorologist at the Weather Service's Medford office.
Daytime temperatures should be in the 40s throughout the week.
Come weekend, rain, and possibly snow, should replace the fog, Nelaimischkies
said.
