Snow stalls plowing at Crater Lake

By LEE JUILLERAT

Here’s an update of goings-on around the Klamath Basin

    Crater Lake  plowing stalled

Ongoing snowfall has stalled road clearing efforts at Crater Lake National Park

Snow plow crews working on clearing walls of snow on the West Rim Drive between Rim Village and the North Entrance were hampered by equipment breakdowns. In addition, a series of heavy snowstorms, which dropped up to 11 inches in a 24-hour period, caused crews to refocus efforts to keep the road open between park headquarters and Rim Village

As of Monday, snowpack at park headquarters was 118 inches, well above the 104 inches normal for that date. Snowfall for the 2007-08 season has surpassed 500 inches. The park did not issue a weather report Tuesday.

   New Alturas Council member

Businessman Bobby Ray will be sworn in as a new Alturas City Council member June 10. Ray will replace longtime council member George Andreasen, who is retiring. Because two incumbents are not being challenged for reelection and because Ray is the only candidate for the third post, no election will be conducted. City Clerk Cary Baker was also unopposed for a new four-year term.

   Dorris weather spotter class

Mike Petrucelli from the National Weather Service office in
Medford will present a summer weather spotter training class 6 to 8 p.m. , Thursday, May 8, at the Butte Valley Library in Dorris.

Topics to be covered include an explanation of weather patterns that affect the area during summer, the basics of thunderstorm and tornado development, and severe weather warnings. The public is invited to the no-cost class. Petrucelli will be recruiting new weather spotters.
