Updates
and news affecting the
Klamath
Basin
agriculture community:
Storm recovery continues
Basin producers
affected by a series of severe storms several weeks ago are still
regrouping and attempting to salvage damaged crops and equipment.
Scott Scholer, ranch
manager for Lassen Canyon Strawberry Plants’ Macdoel ranch, said he
and his staff have done what they can to help their damaged fields
recover, but still anticipate a final crop only 30 to 50 percent of the
average.
“We’ve only
started to get the new runners off the plants,” he said.
Some hay fields in
the Malin and Merrill area also were hit by the storm and efforts to
salvage cuttings in the area have also been seen.
Grant
funds watershed education
A $7,000 grant from
the Klamath Basin Ecosystem Foundation will go toward meetings with
landowners and other outreach efforts concerned with assessment
activities in the lower
Sprague
River
watershed.
The nonprofit
organization lacks a person to provide educational services and provided
the grant to the Klamath Basin Research and
Extension
Center
to allow staff to do so instead.
Lindsey Lyons,
natural resources coordinator for extension center, will use the grant
money to meet with landowners in and around the communities of Chiloquin
and
Sprague
River
and serve as a point of
contact for watershed assessment activities.
Similar efforts were
well received in the upper
Sprague
River
communities of Beatty and
Bly, and
Lyons
said she anticipated a
similar response in the newly targeted communities.
