Use small windmills driving air pumps to improve water quality

Klamath Falls Herald and News

Letter to the Editor

September 20, 2009

Let’s fix Klamath Lake.

I believe that the installation of several small windmills to drive air pumps can aerate the water and help with improved fisheries in and downstream of the lake.

Sewer plants that process wastewater use air entrainment to help purify the release water. As seen on TV, researchers into alga production are using air entrainment to help with alga growth.

Is algae growth bad? If the young suckers in the lake are like the ones in fish tank, alga is a food source for them.  If the existing alga is contaminated, then air entrainment should help purification, and the growth of good alga.

Small slow-turning windmills put on man made islands in the lake can be pleasing and provide roosting and nesting areas for water birds.

With better water quality, downstream complaints of contamination should be less. Better water quality could equal better fish population and the level of the lake can be reduced in the fall for irrigation needs.
