Walden a benefit to Klamath Basin, eastern Oregon

Klamath Falls Herald and News
Editorial
December 2, 2009

Greg Walden has decided to run for re-election as Oregon Second District congressman and we’re glad to see that.

Walden, a Republican, had considered running for governor. He would make a good one if he could be elected, but elections are decided west of the mountains, not the east side, and Republicans don’t run well in the Willamette Valley.

Walden has served six terms in Congress after being in the state Legislature. His voice in behalf of wise use of natural resources, agriculture and rural Oregon is needed in Washington, D.C.

Last week, Walden ended speculation that he would be a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor and said he intended to run again for Congress. The Second District includes all of eastern Oregon and small parts of western Oregon.

He probably would have won the Republican nomination. But the Democratic Party voter edge in western Oregon and a well-known Democratic contender, such as former governor John Kitzhaber or former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, likely would have been too much.

Besides, even in the most certain of times, an area full of federal lands and federal issues such as the Second District needs an effective spokesman in Congress.

That’s likely to become even more important as the proposed Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement bumps along. The agreement is a wide-ranging, often-controversial proposal to settle many water and resources issues that will depend heavily on the federal government.

Walden hasn’t taken a stand on it yet. We hope he’ll do so soon.
