Statement

STATEMENT BY THE HONORABLE JIM SAXTON, CHAIRMAN, SUBCOMMITTEE ON FISHERIES CONSERVATION, WILDLIFE AND OCEANS, AT THE HEARING ON H.R. 2875, A BILL TO AMEND THE KLAMATH RIVER BASIN FISHERY RESOURCES RESTORATION ACT TO PROVIDE FOR TRIBAL REPRESENTATION ON THE KLAMATH FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL, TO CLARIFY ALLOCATION OF THE ANNUAL TRIBAL CATCH, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES: MAY 4, 2000.

Good afternoon, today's hearing is to gather testimony on H.R.2875, a bill to amend the Klamath River Basin Fishery Resources Restoration Act to provide for tribal representation on the Klamath Fishery Management Council, to clarify allocation of the annual tribal catch, and to establish federal recognition of the Karuk tribe's ceremonial and subsistence fishery. The bill was introduced by Congressman Wally Herger of California on September 15, 1999 and we will hear from the Congressman in a few minutes. I understand there may be some controversy surrounding some of the bill's provisions and I look forward to hearing testimony from our witnesses on the legislation.
