NEAR MERRILL, Ore. - The potato harvest is underway in the Klamath Basin, and despite drought worries earlier this year, growers are looking forward to a good harvest and improved prices.

At Wong Potatoes near Merrill, workers are packaging specialty and organic spuds that now make up about 60 percent of the company's production. Wong Manager Dan Chin says to meet his contracts, he had to spread out into other areas last spring to find ground with adequate water.

"We ended up having to go to the Swan Lake-Bonanza area to find some potato ground. We went to Burney, California, which is 125-miles south of here to find some potato ground. So, it's been a trying year for us," said Chin said.

Growers in the basin have also hired a marketing director, thanks to a grant, that they hope will help boost sales of Klamath Basin potatoes into new markets.

Wong says they are selling their potatoes as far away as Taiwan.
