''I'm not surprised that the Yurok Tribe wants Congressman Mike Thompson to introduce a bill to give them 2,600 acres of Redwood National Park and Six Rivers National Park.

But, I'm alarmed that the Congressman seems to be taking this idea seriously.

It's the most outrageous example yet of a tribe seeking special rights at the expense of the general public.

Jeff Ruch, director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, says it all: "These lands are held in common for all citizens of the U.S., including the Yuroks, and that is the way they should stay. This would be an unprecedented and unjustified giveaway of treasured public resources.

No deal with the Yuroks.
