River
Exchange hosts Klamath watershed presentation
March 12, 2008
Mount
Shasta Herald
Phil Dietrich, Klamath
issues coordinator with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will present
a status report on the current efforts to restore the
Klamath River
during a presentation on
Thursday, March 20.
The presentation, hosted by the Upper Sacramento River Exchange, will be
held from
7
to
8:30 p.m.
at Dunsmuir's Brown Trout Cafe on
Sacramento Avenue
.
Dietrich is the lead negotiator for the Stakeholders Restoration
Agreement currently under consideration for the
Klamath River
. During the March 20 event, he will address the status of a
variety of
Klamath River
issues including the
proposed dam removals, water allocations, fishery management plans and
current restoration efforts.
“The
Klamath River
is northern
California
's largest river, valued for
its water resources, cultural significance, recreational opportunities
and salmon and steelhead fisheries,” River Exchange Program Director
Vince Cloward said.
Competing interests, water supply and water quality issues, along with
diminished historic salmon runs, has led to the development of a
collaborative stakeholder restoration agreement for the Klamath River
aimed at sustaining watershed values and ecological health, he said.
“We are privileged to have Phil Dietrich share his report with the
community,” Cloward said. “Phil has invested countless hours working
with diverse stakeholders on this agreement, and the potential benefits
for both the
Klamath River
and surrounding communities
could be monumental.”
Anyone wanting to know
“what's up” on the Klamath is encouraged to attend this free
