Rep. Alan Brown offers solution to vexing salmon fishing issue

State Representative Alan Brown has announced he sent a statement March 28 to Governor Ted Kulongoski in anticipation of a damaging decision impacting coastal salmon fishing by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"We must turn to constructive, innovative solutions at the state level to save our commercial, sport and charter fishing industries," said Brown. "If the Feds deliver us a blow there are things that the governor can do to mitigate the damage."

If NOAA closes salmon fishing along Oregon's coast, Brown proposes that the Governor declares an emergency and in addition recommends the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODF&W) create a Marine Terminal Fishery out to the three-mile limit in appropriate areas south from Cape Falcon. In short, Brown would propose a "bubble fishery" within which both commercial and sport fishing can be undertaken and which would include more central coast rivers with a longer season.

"I stand ready to work with my coastal caucus members and the governor's office to try to mitigate the harmful effects of any federal proposal. By working together we can save family wage jobs and our area tourism industry," Brown stated.
