Governor Ted Kulongoski will join representatives of Oregon's Congressional delegation, members of the Oregon Legislature's Coastal Caucus, fishing industry representatives, local government leaders and state agency directors in Newport today (Friday) for "Ocean Salmon Emergency Summit II."

The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Newport City Hall.

Summit II will highlight actions taken to date by state and federal government agencies to soften the economic impact of the virtual closing of the commercial salmon season. The Governor will kick off the event with a summary of state action to implement the conclusions reached in Salmon Summit I, after which he will introduce representatives of state agencies who will report on their progress and future plans. The Governor will highlight actions he has taken directly to obtain assistance for the idled fishing fleet and coastal communities, as well as his ongoing agenda to address the crisis.

Salmon Summit II will feature a roundtable discussion among the key people affected most directly by the closure, including out-of-work fishers and representatives of the fishing industry and local citizens. Local government leaders, congressional staff, and coastal state legislators will also participate, along with state agency representatives covered by the Governor's Executive Order of April 24, which declared a state of emergency.

The first summit was held in the state capitol in Salem.
