Bend, OR
Residents of Klamath County have voted to
keep their elected officials active participants in the
Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement.
The Klamath County board of commissioners joined more than 25
stakeholders in the agreement.
The KBRA’s goal is to reach solutions that
will both help sustain fish populations and provide reliable
water and power supplies to the region.
But many aspects of the agreement, such as the
decision to remove 4 dams along the Klamath River have proved to
be controversial.
Klamath County Commissioner, Cheryl Hukill
says the measure asked voters if the commission should
discontinue its participation. Hukill says the Board of
Commissioners felt it was important that the county have a seat
at the table.
Cheryl Hukill: “Whether we participated or
not, we had no authority to stop or promote the KBRA. It was
going on without us.”
51 percent of the voters agreed the board of
commissioners should continue as negotiations move forward.
Hukill says the committees are now meeting to determine how the
KBRA will be implemented.
