Oregon Water Enhancement Board Issues Biennial Report On Oregon Plan For Salmon and Watersheds

SALEM, Oregon - The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) recently published its 2003-2005 biennial report on statewide efforts to implement the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds.  The report documents the progress of the Oregon Plan over the last couple of years to enhance watershed health, recover fish and wildlife populations, and improve water quality.

The Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds is a unique and innovative approach to natural resources management.  It focuses on incentive-based local volunteer efforts combined with local, state, and federal government management actions to improve watershed conditions.  The biennial report reviews Oregon Plan actions and investments that have taken place in recent years.

Oregon is a leader in documenting watershed restoration activities in the Pacific Northwest.  "It's important to show how and where we are investing our resources to implement the Oregon Plan," said Tom Byler, Executive Director of OWEB.  "The biennial report helps us to track our progress under the Oregon Plan and keeps the public informed of our efforts."

OWEB operates a grant program that funds local watershed conservation efforts throughout the state.  Thousands of hours of volunteer time and hundreds of projects have been implemented to improve watershed conditions.  "The local groups and volunteers who are putting restoration projects on the ground are the real heroes of the Oregon Plan," said Byler.

The Biennial Report is the first of two volumes.  The second volume, due this summer, will detail the status of coastal coho salmon and evaluate the effects of Oregon's conservation efforts to rebuild the populations of that species.

The report is available to download at the
publications page on the OWEB Web site (www.oregon.gov/OWEB), and a hard-copy can be obtained by calling the OWEB office at 503-986-0178.
