Oregon , Washington Fishermen Brace for Poor Salmon Season on Columbia

WHO: Joel Kawahara and Steve Wilson, commercial fishermen and members

of the Washington Trollers Association, plus other representatives of

Northwest sport and commercial fishing communities.

WHAT: Fishermen whose livelihoods are threatened by declining salmon

runs in the

Columbia

and Snake rivers will testify at next week's Pacific

Fisheries Management Council meeting on behalf of Northwest fishermen,

fishing communities and families.

Low returns of spring Chinook to the

Columbia

 and

Snake

Rivers

 will

severely curtail and may even cancel fishing seasons for

Washington

 and

northern

Oregon

fishermen this year, increasing economic hardship for

Pacific Northwest
communities still reeling from last year's fisheries

disaster on the Klamath.

    WHEN:
Monday, April 2, 2007
 --
3:00 pm
.

Meetings continue throughout the week. Final decision on 2007 Salmon

season management expected on Thursday.
