The Pioneer Press has received multiple
letters about last week's article
regarding a petition sent to
California's Fish and Game to limit
suction dredging for gold on certain
North State rivers and tributaries by
the Karuk, California Trout and Friends
of the North Fork.
Now, it's the miner's turn to slam back.
Many wrote letters reading that the
technique in fact helps salmon and other
fish, and doesn't hurt them, as the
Karuk have argued.
Meanwhile, the Siskiyou County Board of
Supervisors has asked area miner Jim
Foley to write a resolution that they
could send to Fish and Game in
opposition to the Karuk petition to
limit suction dredge mining. The words
were approved by the county
administrator and Foley will present the
formal letter to the board and publicly
ask the board to send the letter to Fish
and Game in the form of a resolution at
Tuesday's board meeting in Yreka at the
court house at 9 a.m. Foley is asking
all miners interested in the issue to
come to the meeting and support the
resolution.
