Page E13, Column 1

I spend the entire week thinking about the stories that are on the
front page. You would think that by the time I write the articles, I
would be tired of thinking about the issues. On the contrary, as I
write articles, I am trying to convey the facts as I have received
them and trying to avoid interjecting my own editorial point of view.
That's where this column comes in. I have other things that interest
me, but since I started writing the news articles, they seems more
relevant for my column.

That being said, I want to put in my two cents about the incredible
seafood place right here in Siskiyou County.

When I went in to talk to Jeanne about these rumors of strip malls
and such, it was the first time I had ever set foot in her place. I'm
a big seafood fan, so I decided to have lunch while I was there.
Let me just say that I wish I had gone in sooner. Everything was
clean and fresh, the service was great, and the atmosphere made me
feel like I was in a movie.

I don't want this to sound like some kind of cheesy advertisement so
I'll just say that if you haven't been in to check it out yet, you'd
better go soon, because there's no telling how much longer she'll be
there.

On a lighter note, this hilarious comedy about the fish hatchery
polluting the river has us all laughing. I just wish I would have
known about it when I was talking to Doug Haaland about the dams. I'm
sure he would have had some witty remark about this recent lawsuit.
In all seriousness, the environmental movement at large has gotten
out of hand and I think people are finally starting to see it. The
basic idea of preserving nature is a good one. If you really take a
moment to think about it, do you honestly know anyone that wants to
destroy nature? I mean really destroy nature by just going in a
hacking down every tree they can get their hands on or killing every
living creature they see. Of course not. We are all basically
environmentally conscious but because some of us have a desire to
make a difference in the world, we jump on any band wagon that comes
along claiming to be on a mission to save the world.

I saw a show recently where this girl went to an environmentalist
rally of some kind and went around gathering signatures to ban a
substance called dihydrogen monoxide. People were quick to say things
like, "Oh, yes, I've heard about that." and "I'm familiar with it."
Then they would sign the petition.

As a selling point, the girl told people that it is used by various
chemical companies, farming operations and industrial companies as
well as being found in reservoirs and streams all across the country.
What is this mystery substance? Here's a hint: Dihydrogen=H2, Monoxide=O.
