If
I were a betting man, I'd place my wager that most of the dams on the
Klamath River
will be coming out.
In some ways I may be premature in placing this bet and I could be made
a fool of later.
In all actuality, the Klamath Dam debate is obstructionism at its
finest. Actually, there is nothing "fine" about obstructionism
- it's detrimental to unity, community and the spirit of finding the
middle ground to move forward.
One
would think that the praise-be-Al-Gore crowd would be clamoring to save
dams which produce cheap, renewable energy without harming the carbon
footprint. The more dams producing power the less of Gore's global
warming.
The Klamath Dams are just the beginning. O'Shaughnessy, Hetch Hetchy,
Elwha and Matilija are next on the hit list. The amazing aspect of the
rest of these dams is they're actually the ones servicing the major
metropolitan areas in which the obstructionists are living.
But the fish, what about the fish?
While, an obstructionist isn't pro-fish when it comes down to the bottom
line. Pacific Power was willing to spend $350 million to place
fish-ladders at its dam sites to allow the fish safe passage. The
obstructionists are rejecting the fish ladders.
What about the fish?
Yes, Pacific Power is footing the bill for the fish hatchery which is
producing 25 percent of the chinook salmon every year in the Klamath.
The obstructionists, headed by Robert Kennedy Jr. is suing on the
grounds that the hatchery is releasing too much toxic discharge.
Maybe you think the obstructionists are looking for alternative methods
of power production which are cleaner and greener than the Klamath dams.
How about the wind? Absolutely not. The obstructionists call wind farms
"cuisinarts of the sky" and have sued the farms for shredding
migratory birds.
Solar is green and clean, isn't it? No way. The solar solution involves
placing large mirrors all over the beautiful
Mojave Desert
, a concept the Sierra Club testified against before
congress.
Well then, surely geothermal is alright and the perfect green, clean
method to replace the unclean-non-green dams. Hold your horses, Sister
Sue, you know what happens there. The same folks seeking to remove the
dams valiantly fought the geothermal solution as it would harm sacred,
protected land.
We go back to the premise that obstructionists aren't seeking solutions,
they seek annihilation. Humans aren't part of the solution or figured
into the equation, humans are the problem in their minds.
I would agree with this latter assessment in part. Humans are part of
the problem, but not all humans, just the obstructionists. Take Al Gore
for example. He lives in a 6,000 square foot mansion with a fleet of
planes and limos - literally.
Al
Gore alone could single handily turn around the global warming problem
simply by riding a bicycle.
