County sets date for KBRA public
forum
By David Smith
Siskiyou Daily News
March 3, 2010
Yreka, Calif. - Siskiyou County Counsel Thomas
Guarino will be working toward an April 1 date for the county’s
public forum on the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement (KBRA).
Guarino brought the prospective date to the attention of the board
at its Tuesday meeting, stating that representatives from the United
States Department of the Interior and PacifiCorp have indicated that
April 1 will work for them and that the prospective venue, the Yreka
Community Theater, will likely be available that night.
The KBRA is an agreement that sets out a 50-year restoration plan
for the Klamath River basin, which stretches from Oregon to
California, and is contingent upon the execution and implementation
of the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement. That agreement
lays out the requirements for the Secretary of the Interior to
decide whether or not four of PacifiCorp’s dams along the Klamath
will be removed.
For stakeholder groups like Siskiyou County, both documents must be
signed in order to remain a part of the process as the agreements
are implemented. Guarino advised that the forum, which will be a
special meeting of the board, will give the supervisors an
opportunity to vote to participate further in the agreements, not
participate, or simply take no action until further considerations
are made.
Guarino stated that as soon as the date and time are finalized, the
information will be released to the public.
