Klamath Dam removal supporters to congregate

By David Smith
Daily News

Portland, Ore. -

September 18 will see a “Day of Action” from supporters of removing four dams along the Klamath River, according to S. Craig Tucker, a spokesperson for the Karuk tribe.

Tucker said that the Day of Action will take place in Portland at the headquarters of PacifiCorp, the company that owns the dams, in an attempt to “put attention on the struggle to remove the dams.”

Those involved with the project are the Klamath Justice Coalition, the Klamath Riverkeeper, various individuals from tribes, fishermen and other non–tribal individuals, according to Tucker, and orchestrated by a group specializing in helping others learn how to get their message heard called the Indigenous Peoples’ Power Project.

“I think the relicensing process is very disenfranchising to the public,” Tucker said, explaining that he believes the public should be able to have more input on decisions that affect them. He also said that those involved want to remind people of the dangers of keeping the dams in as well as what supporters claim are the benefits of taking them out.
