Wow, how can we cut expenses? The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has
listed 30 studies done in the last 20 years! The Department of the
Interior has over 100 pages of studies, data collection,
suggestions, etc. Each page references a dozen separate printed
documents available for review. Let’s just have another study!
I’ll wager that this new study will find what has already been
outlined in the previous studies. Those findings are:
1. Natural phosphorous is in the water;
2. The Upper Klamath Lake is shallow and heats up;
3. Klamath Falls is dumping undertreated sewage in the river;
4. Log staging in the Klamath River is polluting the river;
5. Agriculture fertilizers and chemicals are causing pollution;
6. The Keno reservoir is a toxic cesspool; and
7. There is not enough water available for fall fish runs.
This author would fully expect the Department of the Interior will
announce shortly that the funded study will be conducted by tribal
scientists. The results will be as listed above with one other key
result: that the tribes should get another 90,000 acres of prime
timber land along with the million-plus dollars for this study.
It is amazing that we need another study, given what is already
known.
