Yreka, Calif. — The
Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors’ groundwater advisory
committee ordinance passed in front of a much smaller
contingent of the public Tuesday, setting the course for
individual groundwater basins to form committees.
The basins in which
the committees can now be created include Bray town area,
Butte Valley, Happy Camp town area, Lower Klamath, McCloud
area, Red Rock Valley, Shasta Valley, Scott Valley, Toadwell,
Tule Lake and any additional basins identified by the board.
One member of the
public spoke at the meeting, voicing her opposition to the
ordinance and the advisory committees, saying she feels that
the committees will serve to cause dissension in the
respective basins.
The supervisors
eventually voted to support adoption of the ordinance, with
District 3 Supervisor Michael Kobseff stating that while he
wanted more time to decide on the language of the ordinance,
he feels that the committees will be able to provide better
knowledge to the board when it interacts with other
agencies.
The committees
themselves must be created by a board resolution, which will
determine how many members will participate, which sectors
they will represent and other basin-specific details.
County Counsel
Thomas Guarino was directed at the meeting to begin work on
a resolution for a Scott Valley Groundwater Advisory
Committee, which he will likely bring before the board next
month.
District 1
Supervisor Jim Cook has recommended that the board also
consider looking into the Tule Lake and Butte Valley basins
soon, due to some groundwater issues that have arisen in
those areas.
