A bloom of
potentially toxin-producing blue-green algae has prompted state and
Klamath County health officials to issue an advisory to avoid water
contact at Gerber Reservoir 42 miles east of Klamath Falls.
Water testing revealed that the algae levels are
associated with dangerous toxin concentrations.
Swallowing or inhaling water droplets should be
avoided, as well as skin contact with water by humans or pets.
Drinking water from Gerber Reservoir is especially
dangerous.
The toxins can’t be removed or neutralized by boiling,
filtering or treating the water with camping-style filters.
If you choose eat fish from Gerber, you should remove all fat, skin and
organs before cooking since toxins are more likely to collect in these
tissues.
You also should not eat crayfish or freshwater
shellfish from the reservoir.
Exposure to toxins can produce symptoms of numbness,
tingling and dizziness that can lead to difficulty breathing or heart
problems and require immediate medical attention.
Lesser symptoms of skin irritation, weakness,
diarrhea, nausea, cramps and fainting also should receive medical
attention if they persist or worsen.
Children and pets are particularly susceptible.
