Meeting set to discuss salmon season options

Call it the Doomsday Option

March 19, 2008

Statesman Journal

Option III for sports salmon fishing in the ocean off Oregon between Cape Falcon , near Manzanita, and Humbug Mountain , near Port Orford, consists of a single word: "Closed."

Actually all three of the sports options adopted Friday by members of the Pacific Fishery Management Council for the central Oregon coast range from dim to grim.

Officials said they have little choice, given the collapse of the fall run of Chinook on California 's Sacramento River .

The public's first chance to hear about, and comment on the three options is Friday in North Bend when the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission gets a briefing about the council's decisions.

The commission meeting starts at 8 a.m. at the North Bend Community Center , 2222 Broadway.

Adoption of the ocean salmon seasons will take place at the end of a series of council meetings April 6-12 in Seattle .

Also on the agenda is an informational report about the federal authorization of lethal removal of sea lions at Bonneville Dam.
