Public input sought for salmon plan

August 20, 2005

Salem Statesman Journal

The public can comment until Aug. 26 on a plan to allow hatchery-bred salmon and steelhead carcasses to be placed in selected streams for nutrient enrichment.

Fish carcass placement helps replace some of the marine-derived nutrients historically available from decaying post-spawn fish. Carcasses are collected at fish hatcheries and placed in spawning streams as part of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds.

A Memorandum of Agreement is developed annually between Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

The draft plan is available at www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/.

Information and comments can be sent to Gary Galovich, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, 3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Salem, OR 97303, or e-mail Gary.M.Galovich@state.or.us.
