Yurok Tribal Council member Sid Nix
has retained his seat for another term.
Nix took 88 percent of the vote in the
Oct. 8 primary election, easily defeating challenger
Frankie Joe Meyers to retain his council seat
representing the Weitchpec District.
Two other races are heading for a Nov.
5 run-off election.
In the North District, incumbent
Marjorie Donahue Buckskin took 44 percent of the vote,
pitting her in a run-off against challenger Jack Mattz,
who garnered 29 percent of the vote. Challengers Yvonne
Miller, Hector Natt Sr. and John Oliphant did not garner
enough votes to move on.
In the Requa District, incumbent Ray
Mattz took 21 percent of the vote, narrowly beating out
challenger Ron Bates to move on to a run-off election
between Mattz and challenger David Gensaw Sr., who took
nearly 44 percent of the vote. Challengers Sam Gensaw II
and Dave Severns did not garner enough votes to move on.
The installation ceremony for Nix will
be held at the next regularly scheduled council meeting
at 11 a.m. Oct. 22 in Weitchpec.
