Yurok's
sixth annual
Klamath River
cleanup scheduled
The
Times-Standard
April 16, 2007
The Yurok Tribe is
hosting its Sixth Annual River Cleanup on April 21 in an effort to rid
the
Klamath River
of human-made debris dumped
along the river or washed down river by the winter storms.
The trash destroys salmon
habitat and is also an eyesore along the scenic river.
Last year, 150
participants hauled off nearly 240 cubic yards of waste, and all of the
metal was recycled.
The Cleanup is part of
the Tribe's continuous effort to conserve, restore and sustain the
Klamath River
. The Tribe will provide
bags, gloves and a T-shirt to commemorate your efforts. Volunteers
should wear boots and warm clothing. After the trash bash, volunteers
may join the Tribe in the afternoon for a traditionally cooked steelhead
lunch and raffle. Meet for breakfast at the tribal office parking lot at
8 a.m.
, off Highway 101, on
Klamath Boulevard
.
The cleanup is
co-sponsored by the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project (WSP), whose
mission is to conserve, restore and sustain anadromous watersheds for
future generations by linking education with high quality scientific
practices. A special project of the California Conservation Corps, WSP
is sponsored by the California Service Corps and administered by the
Corporation for National and Community Service.
