The unofficial results of Wednesday's Yurok Tribal election for the seats of chairperson, vice chairperson and Orick District representative point to retaining two incumbents while unseating the other.

The preliminary results show Tribal Chairman Howard McConnell leading a field of five seeking the top seat with 291 votes, 31.73 percent; Maria Tripp followed close behind with 276 votes, 30.10 percent. Judith Marasco came in third with 213 votes, 23.23 percent; Jacqueline D. Nix at 71 votes, 7.74 percent and Jene L. McCovey, 66 votes, 7.20 percent. A total of 917 votes were tallied.

In the vice chairman race, 916 votes were cast. Challenger Bonnie Green tallied 364 votes or 39.74 percent, with incumbent Thomas P. O'Rourke Sr. receiving 329 votes, 35.92 percent of the total. David Severns received 142 votes or 15.50 percent and Lavina Brooks received 81 votes or 8.84 percent.

In the first vote count, incumbent Larry Hendrix had a one-vote advantage over challenger Wendy Kull to represent the Orick District on the Tribal Council. Hendrix received 11 votes, 52.38 percent; Kull received 10 votes, 47.62 percent.

The Yurok Election Board is set to meet Monday to certify the election results.
