Dredging permit sales suspended

The state Department of
Fish and Game has suspended sales of all
California suction dredging permits
following an Alameda County Superior Court
order.
The order by Judge Frank
Roesch prohibits DFG from expending any
money from the California General Fund to
issue suction dredge permits.
On Tuesday the court
clarified that its July 9 order prohibits
DFG from expending General Fund money, even
indirectly, to issue suction dredge permits.
While the order is to remain in place until
further notice, permits issued prior to the
order remain in effect.
Meanwhile, the state
Legislature has passed a bill to suspend all
suction dredge gold mining in the state
until an environmental review is completed
to determine the activity's impact on fish.
That moratorium will go into effect
immediately if the bill is signed into law
by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
