Derry Brownfield:   "There Ain't No Free Water"    Mr. Brownfield got one fact wrong.  He says "It was about three years ago that the Federal Bureau of Reclamation shut off the water in the Klamath Basin leaving farmers in California and Oregon literally "high and DRY." This act by the federal government actually put most of these farmers out of business." Our Klamath Basin farmers are still here, still farming, still working the land, still sharing our environment with the wildlife.  Yes, we lost a few that were over extended, but the rest of us are still here. Dennis T. Avery:  Sustaining People and Planet: The Moral Challenge of the Twenty-first Century ". . . modern high-yield farming techniques allow farmers to be much better stewards of the soil than the previous generations. Thanks to chemical fertilizer, modern farmers no longer need to “wear out” their soils. In the traditional farming of the nineteenth century, growing crops often took more nutrients out of the soil than farmers could replace with manure. As yields and soil organic matter declined, the farm would be abandoned as “worn out.” Today farmers use soil testing and industrially supplied nutrients to keep their soils rich and productive."
