The Klamath Tribes
A Statement of Facts –
Our Promises to
You
- The Klamath Tribes have not considered any plan to
condemn or otherwise “take” private lands within the boundaries of the
former Klamath Indian Reservation.
- The return of former reservation lands currently held
as Winema or
Fremont
national forest lands is only one of twelve elements being considered as
part of a draft water settlement agreement that would benefit the entire
Klamath
Basin
.
- If the lands are returned, all private landowners
within the boundaries of the former reservation will have access to their
private property.
- If the lands are returned, the general public will
continue to have access to the lands for grazing, as well as for hunting,
fishing, camping, and other recreational purposes.
- If the lands are returned, the Klamath Tribes have
committed to a detailed public participation process for review and comment
on tribal land management actions on those lands.
We have provided for a limited waiver of sovereign immunity that
would allow for appeal to the federal district court.
The
Klamath Tribes believe that restoration of the Klamath forest, wildlife,
habitats, and watersheds will benefit all of us in the
Klamath
Basin
.
We dedicate ourselves to accomplishing that for the Tribes and all our
neighbors.
